He played his entire 14-year baseball career for the Boston Red Sox (1937–1951). Doerr achieved a batting average over .300 in several seasons. He set Red Sox team records in several statistical categories. Doerr missed one season due to military service during World War II. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Doerr served as a scout and a coach in professional baseball after he retired as a player. He worked with Carl Yastrzemski before the Red Sox player's Triple Crown season. As of early 2015, Doerr is the oldest living member of the Baseball Hall of Fame and the oldest living former Red Sox player.
