He was a Republican Party member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 39th Assembly District from 2000 until 2013. He was the Speaker of the Assembly in the 100th Wisconsin Legislature. He ran for the United States Senate election in 2012, but lost by a wide margin. After leaving the Assembly, he became a lobbyist.
