In office since 2011, Paul currently serves in the United States Senate as a member of the Republican Party. He is also a trained ophthalmologist, and is the middle son of former U.S. Representative and physician Ron Paul of Texas. Paul has been considered a supporter of the Tea Party movement, and a vocal critic of the U.S. Federal Reserve. He has opposed NSA surveillance of U.S. citizens and supports reduced government spending and taxation. He describes himself as "100% pro-life" and has sponsored legislation extending 14th amendment rights to the unborn fetuses.", Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Paul attended Baylor University and is a graduate of the Duke University School of Medicine. Paul began practicing ophthalmology in 1993 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and established his own clinic in December 2007. He currently holds the record for the ninth longest filibuster in the United State Senate, when he voiced opposition to the nomination of John O. Brennan as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, due to a lack of response from the Justice Department regarding whether the President has the ability to "target and kill an American by drone attack, on American soil, without due process." He is considered by some political analysts as a likely candidate for the Republican nomination for President in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
